


By far the grandest château in the Valley of the Loire, Chambord was built by King François I. It was constructed deep in the forest and used as a hunting lodge. Building the château was an enormous undertaking, which took over 1800 men twenty eight years to complete. The château boasts 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces, 84 staircases , and stables to accommodate 1200 horses. It is surrounded by a wall 22 miles in circumference, enclosing more than 12,000 acres, an area about the same size as the city of Paris . But even with all those fireplaces, it was too cold to be occupied during the winter. In fact, François I only stayed ther for a total of forty two days . . . .
