The name of this sampler comes from a traditional Scottish country dance, made popular in the 1800s. It is a lively dance, in which the dancers progress around a circle, changing partners as they go. Each dancer takes a turn to dance in the centre of the circle while the rest clap and twirl around them.
In this sampler, the eight-sided motifs are reminiscent of the beautiful Quaker samplers of the 1800s. And in the sampler, just as in the Scottish dance, the colour partners change as they progress around the sampler, cross in the centre, and form a graceful and lively pattern which is great fun to stitch.
The sampler can also be worked in monochrome, which will accentuate the strong Quaker influence of the design.
